Championship Season: Building a peak window for three world championships

Championship Season: Building One Peak for Three World Championships

2024 was a big year.

Three World Championships in four months:

  • World Triathlon Long Course Championships – Townsville, Australia

  • IRONMAN World Championship – Kona, Hawaii

  • IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship – Taupō, New Zealand

On paper, it sounds like the perfect season. In reality, it presented one of the biggest challenges: how do you perform at three major events within 4 months.

The answer isn't trying to peak three times.

Instead, the goal is to build a sustainable performance window. Whilst the graph below looks like they are three individual (tapered peaks) - in reality the goal was to have built enough fitness to get me through this 3-4 month period.

Between championship races, the focus shifts from building fitness to protecting it. The hard work has already been done. Even though all three of these were A races, there still had to be an A+ Race to steer the training.

The biggest lesson from 2024? A successful season isn't about chasing peak fitness every month. It's about staying healthy, being consistent, and arriving at each start line ready to perform. Getting to the start line in Taupo healthy with energy for another World Championship race was the real goal.

Anyone can train hard. The real skill is knowing when to push, when to recover, and when to trust the work you've already done.
